Your recordings

Everything ShowMeWise does with a recording (frames, speech to text, reading the screen, writing the guide, clips and exports) happens inside your browser on your own computer. Your video, its transcript and the guide are not uploaded to us or to anyone else. We cannot see them. The one exception is your own choice: if you turn on Ollama cloud models and pick one, what that model reads goes to Ollama's servers (see Optional features).

What we do not collect

  • No account and no sign-up.
  • No analytics, no ads and no tracking cookies.
  • We do not sell or share any data, because we do not collect any.

What your browser downloads, and from where

  • The website itself comes from Netlify, our host. Like any web host, Netlify may keep standard server logs (for example your IP address and the time of the request) for security and running the service. See Netlify's privacy policy.
  • The first time you use a feature, the AI models it needs are downloaded once, mainly from Hugging Face, and then kept in your browser's cache. Those servers see a normal download request. They never receive your video. See Hugging Face's privacy policy.

Optional features

  • Ollama runs on your own computer. When you choose it, the page talks to it at localhost, and Chrome may ask you to allow local network access. This traffic stays on your machine.
  • Ollama cloud models are off unless you turn them on in the AI settings, after a notice you must confirm. A cloud model runs on Ollama's servers, not on your computer: the words and screenshots of your video, a document or your question go there to be answered. Use them only for videos and documents that are not private. Ollama's own terms and privacy policy apply (Ollama privacy). ShowMeWise never picks a cloud model by itself. The plugin's chats and your pet use a cloud model only while cloud models are on and you picked one in the AI settings; those answers are marked ☁. When you chose a cloud model and are offline, or its free amount is used up, the AI on your computer answers instead and the page tells you; it never goes the other way (a model on your computer never switches to the cloud by itself).
  • Search the web in Vid Chat only runs when you click it. It opens a new tab on Perplexity with the question you typed, nothing else. Your video and your guide are not sent. Perplexity's own privacy policy applies there.
  • Vidi, the help chat, answers from the help text of this website. It reads error messages shown on the page, and screenshots you paste, on your computer only. For written answers it uses Ollama on your computer or a small AI in your browser (downloaded once), never a server.

The screen recorder

Record your screen only starts when you press it, and only records what you choose in the browser's own picker (the whole screen, one window or a tab), with your microphone if you allow it. The recording is saved in this browser's storage while it runs, so a crash does not lose it, and stays there until its guide is finished or you delete it. It is never uploaded.

The browser plugin

  • The ShowMeWise plugin (Chrome and Edge) uses this website, in a tab of its own, to do the work. Everything stays on your computer, like on the website.
  • Connect to Ollama (plugin 1.1): only when you press Connect and allow it in Chrome's box, the plugin may talk to Ollama on your own computer (localhost and 127.0.0.1, port 11434). It then lets this website and the plugin itself use Ollama, without the terminal setting; no other website gets that access. Nothing leaves your computer for this. You can take the access back in Chrome's extension settings.
  • Ask Vidi about this page reads the page you are on only when you ask, after you allowed it once. If the answer is not there, Vidi may read up to 3 linked pages of the same site; it tells you which.
  • Show me on the page runs only when you press it: Vidi marks buttons on the page and takes a screenshot of the visible part for the chat. It never clicks or types for you.
  • Meet your pet on the Pet training page sends your answers (your name, the pet, its name, the language, what you like and the AI you chose) to the plugin in this browser, nowhere else. Getting a model through the Ollama helper downloads it from Ollama to your computer, only when you press the button.
  • Guiding you through a tool (the pet) reads the page you are on and the manual you gave it, each time you ask or press Done, next step, to find your next step. It marks that step like Show me on the page and never clicks or types for you.
  • Chats and screenshots are kept only until you close the browser. A document you pick is read on your computer and not kept.
  • Your pet (BETA) appears on web pages only after you allowed Vidi to read pages, and you can turn it off or hide it on any site. It reads a page only when you ask about it. Its chat, its name, your name and the things you told it you like are kept in this browser until you clear them (“Forget what my pet knows about me”). The last file you gave it (for example your CV) and the form details you chose to save are kept in this browser too, never sent anywhere, until you say “forget the file” or “forget my saved details”; “what do you know about me?” lists all of it, and 📄 Open shows the file. Timers, alarms and reminders are kept in this browser too.
  • Search the web with your pet sends only your search words to Wikipedia and DuckDuckGo, to get short answers with their links. See Wikimedia's privacy policy and DuckDuckGo's privacy policy. “More results” opens your own search engine in a new tab.

What stays on your device

The website keeps a copy of its own files (pages, scripts, pictures) in your browser, so it opens fast and also works without internet; nothing you make or type is in that copy, and it updates itself on your next visit online. Downloaded model files stay in your browser's storage so the next run starts faster. An exported HTML guide can remember your checklist ticks in that browser. Vidi remembers how you want it to answer (Ollama, browser AI or no AI) in this browser. To pick up where a run stopped (a crash, a closed tab, the computer going to sleep), the transcript and the screen text of the last video, and the parts already written, are kept in this browser's storage. The written parts are cleared when the guide is finished; the transcript and screen text stay, so the same video starts faster next time, until you choose another video, which replaces them. While a video is processed, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on, so the computer does not go to sleep halfway; this ends when processing ends or when you leave the tab. You can remove all of this at any time by clearing the site data in your browser settings. If you tell Vidi your name, it keeps your name and the topic you asked about last in this browser, to greet you next time; Forget me in the chat clears it.

Your rights

Under data protection law such as the GDPR you have rights over your personal data. ShowMeWise itself holds no personal data about you. For hosting logs, contact Netlify. For any question about this page, see Contact below.

2Terms of use

  • ShowMeWise is free to use. It is a personal portfolio project, provided as is, without any warranty. It may change, pause or stop at any time.
  • AI output can be wrong or incomplete. Always check a guide before you share it or rely on it. You are responsible for the documents you create and share.
  • Only use recordings you are allowed to use, and remove personal or confidential information before you share a guide.
  • Do not use ShowMeWise for anything illegal or to harm others.
  • If you turn on Ollama cloud models, you choose to send what that model reads to Ollama, under Ollama's own terms. Do not send work, customer or other confidential material that you are not allowed to share.
  • Your pet (BETA) is a test feature. Its answers can be wrong, and its timers, alarms and reminders ring only while the browser is open. Do not rely on them for anything important, such as medicine or safety.
  • The online version accepts videos up to 30 minutes or 1000 MB, to protect your browser from running out of memory. The desktop app has no limit.
  • Turning a video into a guide works your computer hard for a long time (memory, processor and, with some models, the graphics card). Keep the laptop plugged in, close programs you do not need and save your other work first.
  • To the extent the law allows, there is no liability for any loss or damage from using ShowMeWise. This does not limit liability that cannot be limited by law.
